The Sussex Academy is a public, charter school offering an accelerated academic program for the students of Delaware in grades six through ten. The academic program at the Sussex Academy is based on the principles of the Expeditionary Learning curriculum model, which enables the students to attain the State’s high academic standards as well as to develop personal responsibility, self-monitoring and reflection skills, and positive citizenship values.
Children in grades six through ten who reside in Delaware may attend the Sussex Academy. Enrollment, however, is limited by the State of Delaware based on the school’s charter. Each fall applications for the upcoming sixth and ninth grade classes are accepted and, if necessary, a lottery is held in January to select the students who will be invited to enroll.
The Sussex Academy is also very proud of its talented and highly qualified staff that has developed and maintains a challenging curriculum in a supportive and caring environment for its students.
The mission of the Sussex Academy is to prepare students for future academic success by providing an accelerated, supportive academic environment within a small school setting.
Our vision is to cultivate students of distinction by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and values to become successful, productive citizens.
We believe that if we – parent/guardian, student, and school – all work together that our students will become independent, critical thinkers who achieve academically and promote community service and social consciousness. To that end, the Sussex Academy has established a School Success Plan that outlines the expectations and responsibilities of all members of our learning community.
The Sussex Academy has been recognized by the State of Delaware as a “Superior” school each year it has been rated.
