Newark Charter School is a non-profit organization and a public charter school of the State of Delaware authorized by the Department of Education with the assent of the Delaware State Board of Education.

The school, operating since 2001, serves 2,350 students in grades K through 12 on two campuses in the City of Newark.

Below are the enrollment figures for the 2017-18 school year:

  • Primary School: Kindergarten to grade 3: 190 students per grade; approximately 22 students per class
  • Intermediate School: grade 4 through 6: 190 students per grade; approximately 27 students per class
  • Jr./Sr. High School: grade 7 to 11: 190 students per grade (Jr. High) and 162 students per grade (Sr. High); approximately 27 students per class.

Mission

The Mission of the Newark Charter School is to promote high levels of student effort, achievement and decorum for children in grades K-12 in the Greater Newark community by providing continuous, engaging and rigorous academic challenges grounded in a sequential core of common knowledge, delivered in a community of students, educators and involved parents who value scholarship and appropriate behavior.

Since the school’s inception, Newark Charter School’s academic results have been consistently excellent:

  • Twice named National Blue Ribbon School for Academic Excellence (U.S. Department of Education)
  • Named Reward School: Highest Performing School and Superior School (Delaware Department of Education)
  • Named Top Workplace-Best in Delaware (News Journal/Workplace Dynamics)
  • National Title I Distinguished School (U.S. Department of Education)
  • Ranked # 2 on the national list for top performing schools or districts in reading. (Global Report Card, George W. Bush Presidential Center)
  • Designated a Core Knowledge Visitation School and top ten Core Knowledge Schools in the Country (Core Knowledge Foundation)
  • 3,200 students on a waiting list
