Academia Antonia Alonso (La Academia) is a public elementary school – it is free to the public. La Academia will be the first dual language Expeditionary Learning elementary school in Delaware with a focus on nurturing bilingual, biliterate and multicultural children. Academic instruction will take place half of the time in English and half in Spanish. Students will learn to think critically and take action in their classrooms and communities through project based learning and by engaging in real life issues.
At La Academia, we believe that we are at our best when we are working together for the common good. Our school opened in August 2014 with two grade levels, Kindergarten and 1st grade. The school will add a grade level every year, to grow to a K-5 school by 2018.
La Academia’s Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark S. Phelps as the new Head of School, effective July 1, 2015. After a careful and comprehensive search, Dr. Phelps was selected from a strong pool of candidates and stood out throughout the search process as a strong match for our new leader. He comes to us as a highly dedicated educator with 13 years of experience in roles that include public school teacher, working with pre-service teachers in higher education, and as a school administrator. In his current position as Associate Principal of Seaford Middle School, Dr. Phelps has shown a strong commitment to meeting the needs of all students and in connecting with families and communities across all cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
His doctoral research investigated the K-12 school factors that support the academic success of undocumented Hispanic students. During Dr. Phelps’ tenure in the schools he has served, he has demonstrated an ability to develop strong and productive relationships, make decisions based on what is best for students, and employ current research to inform instructional practices.
